NATURE INTERPRETIVE CENTER AND ETNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM.
ALTO TAJO NATURAL PARK.
RIBA DE SAELICES (GUADALAJARA).

In 2006, the construction of the Interpretation Center was proposed on a plot near the Church of La Riba (1st version). The problems by distance of separation of the building to the adjoining dwellings, prevented the processing of this project in time and forced the writing of a new project in a plot located in the viewpoint, next to the medieval tower (2nd version).

In parallel, the Provincial Delegation of Culture developing a Master Plan for the Cueva de los Casares and the existing archaeological site in its surroundings. Therefore, the possibility of unifying resources and building a joint interpretation center in the town of Riba de Saelices is considered.

This Center would approach the interpretation of the Cueva de los Casares and the existing archaeological site in its surroundings (approximately 75% of the exhibition space) and of the cultural resources and the historical and artistic heritage of the Alto Tajo Natural Park (approximately 25% of the exhibition space).

Its execution is included in the RED NATURA agreement, between the Ministry of Environment, and Rural and Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Environment.

In June 2006, the network of geological interpretation routes ("Georutas") of the Alto Tajo Natural Park became operational. One of these self-guided routes, which has interpretive panels, outcrop plates, specific leaflet-guide of each route and will have a guidebook in 2007, runs between the Valle de los Milagros and Cueva de los Casares, in the town of The Riba de Saelices and the salt pans of Saelices de La Sal.

The first version is located between two medians of domestic architecture integrated into the urban fabric.

It is proposed as a continuity of the street itself on the roofs of the building, causing a journey that culminates in a viewpoint to the valley and the Cueva de Los Casares taking advantage of the rugged topography that limits the urban area.

Oblique and rotund blind volumes of corten steel are generated, which contrast with popular architecture, establishing a permanent dialogue between traditional and current architecture and allowing a clear differentiation between both programmatic readings.

The second version generates a classic program of an Interpretation Center, a didactic building designed exclusively for learning about nature, linked in this case to ethnographic research and more specifically to the Cueva de Los Casares. Therefore, there will be an area for an interpretation room and museum, projection room, reception, toilets and storage. The main constraints are derived from the topography of the plot, its location in the viewpoint next to the medieval tower force to take advantage of the magnificent views that are enjoyed in the area of the Cueva de Los Casares.

The approach of beginning to focus the visuals from the exterior and the interior of the building to the zone of the surroundings the Cueva de Los Casares and the magnificent surrounding landscape in an angle of 180º, has conditioned the operation scheme of the Center. The insertion in the urban fabric of a singular building between domestic architecture, implies assuming the differences in scale that may exist between the two types of configuration. Therefore, a small-scale building has been designed inserted in the urban environment and adapted to the topography, which tries to be part of the urban landscape while analyzing the natural landscape, for which it merges with the land and the roof itself ends at the level of the access road and serves as an extension of the current plaza-mirador. In this way, it is possible to access the viewpoint located in it, to observe the environment with two possible perceptions (the aforementioned and the surrounding urban environment including the defensive tower) without having to enter the interior. The interpretation room, diaphanous, allows to conveniently dispose any type of interpretive module and the projection room complements in the continuous section, the exhibition and museum route.

The rest of the action tries to integrate itself into the pre-existing volumes by means of a succession of planes that at the same time recreate the autochthonous tectonic volumetry, configure spaces and control the closest visuals, affecting the distant ones.

The incorporation of traditional materials such as Rodeno stone, is complemented by the bush hammered finish and ocher pigmentation of the concrete walls. This gives the whole a final touch quality, both externally and in the interior, close to the stone, which refers, in short, to the image of a cave excavated by time. The use of these materials therefore contributes to integrating the building in the urban environment, and thus allow betting for a more contemporary formal image in response to the idea of unique volume that must represent a Visitor Center.

The study of accessibility is always the reference of the human scale on construction and allows to solve in a very simple way the different circulations possible both inside and outside.
